Sensa weight loss products are another false hope

If obesity is a disease of the body and society, then a by-product of this modern sickness is the frantic drive to get a ?safe? weight loss pill on the market. Whether ethical or not many companies have tried and failed to get a safe drug in the public domain, cashing in on the vulnerability of the afflicted sufferers.

The latest case to come to light is that of Sensa Products.

The U.S. District Court in San Francisco has filed a suit against Sensa Products for their misguiding claims about weight loss ?sprinkles? which according to their creator, Dr. Alan R. Hirsch, promote weight loss without the need for a change in lifestyle or eating habits.

Sensa's claims are not scientifically based

Hirsch, a broad-certified neurologist; not a dietician, states that his crystals work by confusing the part of the brain which controls ?satiety?, in other words it supposedly convinces the brain that the consumer is full and no longer wants to eat.

Sensa isn?t selling the product as new-age medicine or an organic alternative, but Jeanette McClendon of Contra Costa County, California has accused Hirsch of quackery, calling him a ?particularly sophisticated hustler, one with a medical degree and a thick stack of junk science to support the claim his magic crystals are ?clinically proven.??

Hirsch is basically a proponent of the pseudo-science movement; using word of mouth and privately conducted research to conjure up conclusions which can only be contested after�they?ve�been published, as opposed to open science which is taken from theory to conclusion via research, critiques and refinement.

The outcome for Sensa Products is that the suit filed against them states they have violated various Californian laws, especially those concerned with false advertising and unfair business practises.

Like many other companies, even those with a strong reputation for delivering ?quality? products, weight loss pills are the Golden Fleece. The FDA has rebutted three applications for weight loss pills in the last year, including Qnexa and Orexigen.

The truth is that if people want to lose weight safely and healthily, a pill is not the answer. There is no secret to weight loss; healthy food and exercise are the only solution to a growing problem in an age where sugary foods, chemical enhancements and false health claims are rife.

Dr. Hirsch is way off the mark if he thinks people can continue to live the same way and still lose weight with a few sprinkles of magic crystals. No; the only answer is to cut out sugar, white flour products, pasta and white rice as well as dairy products and red meat ? especially those that have been radiation treated or contain ?E? numbers.

More organic, green vegetables are most important along with fresh, organic fruit. Drinks can be sweetened with fruit juices, honey or dates. Out go foods like pizza, potato chips and other baked goods which contain acrylamide that is known to cause cancer.

There is no easy way out, no quick fix or magic potion to get the weight off; only better living on better quality food and exercise which will lead to a happier way of life.

Jolie And Pitt To Adopt Chinese Orphan?

Angelina Jolie is considering adopting another child, less than two weeks after checking into a hospital to prepare for the birth of her twins, according to reports.

Heavily pregnant Jolie checked herself into a Nice, France hospital on 29 June (08) - where she will remain until her babies, with partner Brad Pitt, are born.

The expected additions will be the fifth and sixth children for the couple - who are allegedly on a mission to add a seventh member to their family.

According to reports, the pair was so moved by the plights of children orphaned by May's (08) devastating earthquake in China, they want to adopt a child from the region.

A source tells the National Enquirer, "Even as the birth of their twins impended, Angie and Brad were already talking adoption again. She's devastated over the earthquake that occurred in China, she has been in constant touch with relief workers as part of her U.N. involvement - and even got her hands on photos of a few orphaned kids.

"She's made overtures to offer a home to one, or even two China earthquake orphans, if they're siblings".

Jolie and Pitt have three adopted children, Maddox, six, Zahara, two, and Pax, four, as well as their biological two-year-old Shiloh.

So anyone watching American Idol Season 10? Or has the show lost some of its mojo?
I'm still a huge fan and was upset recently when Naima and Thia were kicked off. I didn't think it was their time to go and I was hoping they would make it close to the end.
Anyways, anybody else on here watching it?

Outrage Over ?10 Hottest Female Sex Offenders?

The Houston Press is under fire for releasing a list called the ?10 Hottest Women on the Texas Sex Offenders List.?

Next to the mugshots (which includes a link for marriage proposals) the blogger lists the women?s city, crime and victim information.

The offending ?hotties? have assaulted boys and girls ranging from two to 16 years old.

?This kind of thinking that female sex offenders are harmless seductresses rather than predators or perpetrators can set us back decades,? said Torie Camp, deputy director the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault (TAASA).

What?s next for the Houston Press? ? a public service announcement and formal apology?

Nicole Richie lashes out at ?cruel? pregnany rumors

Nicole Richie, who recently tied the knot with long-term partner Joel Madden, is far from impressed with the rumors doing the rounds that she is pregnant and has made her thoughts about the media gossip very clear in a statement.

?Contrary to recent speculation, I am not pregnant?, the mother of two said to People.

?This irresponsible reporting continues to feed an atmosphere of self-doubt and insecurity.

?To publicly point out a change in anyone?s body is mean-spirited and cruel.

?People?s bodies change and change again. This is not newsworthy and is a waste of valuable media space that should be used for more important issues,? the 29 year old added.

The former reality star?s weight dropped to a worrying low in the past and when pictures of her looking rail thin in a bikini looking rail thin surface, specualtion that she was suffering from an eating disorder ?which she has always vehemently denied ? was rife.

?It was a little unfair to say someone has an eating disorder when they don?t,? Richie said in the March� 2010 issue of Marie Claire UK.

?It?s extremely insulting and irresponsible. An eating disorder is serious and it?s a disease,? she added.

Actress Keira Knightley is another celebrity who denies having an eating disorder, in spite of being very thin. Felicity Huffman, Thandie Newton and Paula Abdul, however, have all admitted to having suffered from anorexia or bulimia.

War of the Worlds: The small things save the world

It is with more than a little joy that I get to write about War of the Worlds today, the classic and timeless H. G. Wells novel which he penned in 1898. The story centred on a young man trying to survive an alien invasion in London and his journey through a vastly changed landscape in search of his beloved Carrie, while encountering desperate and strange characters along the way.

The story was made more famous on October 30^th, 1938 when Orson Welles read an adaptation of the story on American radio. His narration was so compelling that thousands of listeners panicked, thinking that invaders really had landed.

In the 1950?s the book was made into a film but the story was sadly changed for the American audience and the big screen version never captured the intimate essence of Well?s original tale.

I?m not even going to mention the 2006 Spielberg film which starred Tom Cruise, other than to say it was an absolute disgrace of a remake and had virtually nothing to do with the original.

For me the ultimate ?remake? or ?retelling? of War of the Worlds came in the 1970?s in the shape of Jeff Wayne?s musical version; a fantastic sounding odyssey that took the listener through the quiet and peaceful streets of a London evening and the strange events on Horsell Common in Woking, to the nightmarish, burning streets of a defenceless capital city undergoing the slow and painful transformation of an earthly to an alien place.

Richard Burton provided the voice of the protagonist and his distinctive voice and superb acting skills truly brought the story to life. For a seven year old boy, War of the Worlds was utterly captivating and certainly shaped my own creative writing for years to follow; much to the dismay and joy of many an English teacher.

The Martians were terrifying creatures, all brain and tentacles in their beautifully designed tripod vehicles which strode across the land belching out flaming death rays and levelling the entire world to suit their own needs; a world they turned red like the surface of Mars from which they?d travelled in cylinders propelled by green comets.

Here comes the spoiler for those who have never read, seen or listened to the story.

While the Martians seemed indestructible and completely invulnerable against man?s greatest weapons, they failed to consider the simplest things; tiny organisms which began attacking them the moment they set tentacle upon the earth. While humankind?s greatest achievements and technological advancements failed them, the humblest aspects of creation quietly saved the planet, and perhaps there is a valuable lesson in that message.

Humans believe they are top of the food chain and rulers of the planet, but too often our species is found wanting. We have our place in the world and it is arrogant to think that we can be anything more than the sum of our parts. Nature has a way of dealing with unwanted pests and has historically proven to do so.

As the message on the Georgia Guidestones states: ?Be not a cancer upon the earth.?

H. G. Wells was an incredible anthropologist and it is clear that there are warnings in his stories. The simplest message we can draw from this is that we should not tamper with the natural order of things. Nature has developed an intricate system in which everything can live in balanced harmony; it is arrogant of man to think he can mess with that as is being done by companies such as Monsanto.

Let nature be.
